In spite of being among the oldest city around the world “Varanasi” is believed to be the first living place for the great Aryans during 2nd century before Christ. The much history of this land is still unknown with the facts of its origin.
Manikarnika Ghat, Dasaswamedh Ghat, Assi Ghat, Harish Chandra Ghat, and Tulsi Ghat are among renowned five ghats of Varanasi.
Centuries before Varanasi was known as “Kashi” this word derived from Kasha which means brightness. The place has also been known by different names in past such as Anandakanana, Avimuktaka, Mahasmasana, Brahma Vardha, Surandhana, Ramya and Sudarsana, this all names have their own history with it. Mythology refers that the river Ganges got its origin in Varanasi from locks of Lord Shiva. Varanasi has been the center civilization & learning for last three thousand years though its origin is not known yet. Varanasi got its name from Ganges’s two tributaries Varuna & Asi.
Manikarnika Ghat has one of the two main cremation ground on the Ghats of Varanasi. This Ghat is believed to be one of the most sacred and oldest Ghats of Benaras. According to the legends it is believed by Hindus that one who will be burnt here in the cremation ground of this ghat would attain instant “moksha” (salvation) from the process of birth and re birth in this immortal world. Manikarnika Ghat signifies both destruction and creation as being laid in the center of all the five tirthas. The remains of the mortal body are consigned to the fire flames with many prayers so that their souls rest in peace at this Manikarnika Ghat.
At this ghat one will get to see a sacred well named as the Manikarnika Kund. One mythology says that this kund was dug by great Lord Vishnu during the time of the creation while the ashes of the bodies being burnt makes one recollect the eternal truth that everything in this world would get destroyed one day nothing is inevitable. While other says that Lord Shiva with Devi Parvati came to visit Kashi to grant Lord Vishu his wish after his prolonged meditation. Vishnu dug a well so that they can have a bath, on the river bank of Ganga. While Lord Shiva was taking bath a jewel (Mani) from the earring of his fell down into the well so this well is named as Manikarnika.
Manikarnika Ghat is one of the two main cremation ground on the Ghats of Varanasi. Hindu mythology claims that this ghat has special sacred power and those persons who are cremated here will receive “moksha” or salvation. A myth tells that Lord Vishnu did tapasya (meditation) for several thousand years to please Lord Shiva so that he can convince him not to destroy Kashi, the holy city, when he was up to destroys this entire world and subsequently manages to do so.
Manikarnika Ghat has a special significance in the Hindu mythology and for years to come people will come and visit this place as one of the most sacred places of the earth to attain moskha with its holy dip.
