Come To Know The Power Of Goddess Durga At The Magnificent Temple Of Durga At Varanasi

Varanasi, also known as Baneras or Banaras, is located at the banks of Ganga in Uttar Pradesh. For the people following Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, it is regarded as a most prominent holy place. Some people also refer Varanasi as the “city of temples”.

One of the temples in Varanasi is Durga Temple. It is commonly also called as the “Monkey Temple” also. The temple was built in the 18th century. The Goddess Durga temple lies in the area named Durga Kund and as the name suggests, it is dedicated to the Goddess Durga. It is considered to be the most popular temple in Varanasi.

The temple being built in the eighteenth century was in the Nagara style of temple architecture. It is made of red stones and has got multi tiered Shikharas place one over another also known as spire. A water tank in rectangle shape is also located adjacent to the temple itself.

The chief Goddess in this temple is the Goddesas Durga and is a magnificent formation of Devi. The temple was built by a Bengali Queen. This Durga temple is one of the most sacred temples in this city. It is a richly carved building made up of red stones.

The temple has got a structure which inflicts and put forwards a spiritual vibe to the environment and this it is an important temple in Varanasi.

The Bengali Maharani had it build in Nagara style which is the North Indian approach in temple designing. It is mixture of red and yellowish colour and has multi tiered Shikharas and is positioned on a rectangular tank. This rectangular tank is also called as the Durga Kund.

The Durga kund was built in 1772 by a pious person named Narayana Diksit. There is also a small temple located nearby which is committed to Kharva Narsimha. As per the Puranas, it is believed that Goddess Durga is taking care of this place since many centuries and has protected this Holy City.

The legends as well as the workers who worked in the temple also suggest that the current statue of Goddess Durga was not actually made by the devotees but it came out in the temple with its own. The temple is also named as the “Monkey Temple” for the reason that there are a large number of monkeys present in the temple. These monkeys have made the temple their home.

Hinduism preaches us that the Goddess Durga personifies female power or ‘Shakti’, with the red dress she wears, having tiger as her ride, fully carrying weapons including Lord Shiva’s trident, discus that Lord Vishnu carries and a sword.

The Non Hindus cannot enter the actual temple but they can enter the patio of the Durga temple. Thousand of Hindu disciples come to visit the Durga temple during the festival of Navratri and other propitious occasions.

Goddess Durga is a dreadful form of Lord Shiva’s wife, Parvati. Therefore during festivals, we see that there are many sacrifices of goats to the Goddess. Durga temple having such unique history is the reason why it is so popular.
